Why we built Euphoria

The founders' story

Euphoria Telecom was founded in May 2010 to bring a world-class business phone system to South African companies of every size — one that puts the customer in full control. The interviews below tell that story in the founders' own words.

The founding story, in George's words

A long-form interview with co-founder George Golding on why Euphoria Telecom exists: the frustration with long-term contracts, high call costs and poor service that South African businesses simply put up with before 2010 — and the decision to build something better.

It's the most complete version of "why we built this" you'll find anywhere, and the clearest explanation of the ethos that still runs through the platform today: empower the customer, charge fairly, and earn the relationship every month rather than locking it in.

In conversation with both co-founders

A throwback interview from the early years featuring co-founders George Golding and Conrad De Wet, then Chief Technology Officer. The conversation captures the original two-handed vision behind the platform — George on the customer side, Conrad on the engineering side.

It's worth watching for a sense of where the company came from, and how the two founding instincts — customer empowerment and proudly local engineering — became the DNA of one of South Africa's first pure cloud-based business PBX systems.

In the founders' words

What Euphoria was built to do

Why was Euphoria Telecom founded?

Euphoria opened its doors in May 2010 to solve a problem the founders had themselves: long-term contracts, high call costs and very weak service from the incumbent. The goal was to bring an international-class business phone system to the South African SME — and to grow it from a single customer into a platform now serving more than 6,000 businesses, with no sign of that growth slowing down.

What did you decide NOT to do?

The typical South African thing at the time was to promise you the world in the advertising, then hide the catch in the fine print. We didn't want to do that. What you see is what you get — and we proved it with a 30-day contract. We don't need to tie you in, because we don't intend to give you a reason to leave.

Why does month-to-month matter so much?

The moment you sign a two-, three- or five-year contract, human nature kicks in and the provider who is meant to be serving you loses the motivation to help. A 30-day contract keeps that motivation honest, and it hands control back to the business owner — control over the system, over costs, and over the relationship itself.

What do you mean by "putting the customer in control"?

It works like internet banking. You log on and make the change yourself — you don't sit in a queue or send a ticket and wait. That's what makes it true cloud: it's elastic, so a three-user business can run the same platform as a 10,000-user business and pay only for what it uses. A small business can run a system for a fraction of what a legacy PBX would cost to install.

Is Euphoria about being the cheapest?

No. A lot of people put cost first, but the real cost is not having a phone system that works — that costs a business far more than running one. Price matters, but service matters more: service for when something goes wrong, and service that helps you actually use the system to run your business better. As one example, we took an educational institution from R81,000 a month on the incumbent's system, with no control, to R17,000 a month on ours, with full control.

Who really runs Euphoria?

The customer. Our employees, our shareholders and the founders all know that the person paying the bill is the customer — without them we have no role, no place and no purpose. Once you filter every decision through that, you end up treating your customers exceptionally well, because everything depends on it.
